I vaguely remember hearing of a law suit back in the late 80's early 90's where a (then) quarterback, allegedly filed suit against a shoe manufacturer for naming one of their shoes after the quarterback without asking express permission. As I remember it, the shoe manufacturer promptly wiggled out of the situation by stating the shoe was named after the state and not the quarterback.
It could be a rogue rumor. Could be true, could be false. Who knows? Who cares? The point is, I read it or heard about it and I still remember.
For certain anytime, anywhere, under any circumstance any individual who is in a public forum is subject to scrutiny, judgment and misunderstandings across the board; politicians, sports stars, musicians, actors and yes, even minuscule little bloggers such as myself.
We become wide open to judgement and held responsible for what we say, how we say it and how others interpret what they think they heard - whether or not what they believe to have read is what was intended by the writer.
“ I know you think you understand what you thought I said but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant”― Alan Greenspan
If something is said or done - it will be viewed however the reader/viewer deems fit. Fair? Sometimes, other times not so much. Anytime you put yourself out there, you may find yourself on a chopping block. People WILL remember what they read. They will remember how what they read made them feel when they read it.
Oh, so you're pissed. You think this is about you. You're wrong, but GOOD! I made you think! I brought you in. Mission accomplished.
I often write about things that hit me emotionally. Mostly it's things that I see or read about in the news or see on a television show. Things that make me think. Things that make me want to help, or change, or bring to light in some way where I can make a positive difference. However it comes about, the fact is that it's my forum and I can't please everyone all the time. I can say whatever I'm going to say, and people may find me offensive, or dramatic, or downright mean - regardless of my actual intent.
I can't help what other people think or feel, nor can I help if someone internalizes something I've written.
That is, after all, what a writer's goal is - to make you think and to make you feel - to bring you into their world in your own mind.
In the time that I've been blogging, I've seen many bloggers quit blogging because the people in their world turned against them for their words - even when they weren't about the person who became angry. It's sad, really. I have also been misinterpreted by a few. I, personally, refuse to stop writing just because someone has internalized my words. Am I writing regularly here? Nope, but I'm still writing and I'm still being read. Just not by people who know me personally.
Have you ever read a book & then gone to see the movie and thought - that's not AT ALL how I pictured that person to look? Same thing. The writer's words, someone else's perception.
Your perception of what's written is on you, not me.
I can honestly say that, with very few exception, if I've blogged a current happening or individual, I've made those I wrote about aware that they were being blogged. Yes, I even let Kevin (Sorbo) know he was being blogged! :)
Which brings me back to the first paragraph of this blog....
Someone will always see something and think, "Hey - that's me!" The fact is that sometimes, just sometimes - as close at it may seem - it may not be about you at all. It may actually be the state the shoe is named after and not the Super Bowl winning quarterback.
No one can really tell what's in another person's head, or heart.
Only you know how your own heart looks.
So, please...before you get all pissed off at a blogger for what they've written - maybe ask. Hey, is this about me?? Because probably - it's NOT about YOU! REALLY!! :)
Thank you for reading my blog!
This blog is dedicated to all my fellow bloggers. Those who've been "Trolled" or harpooned in some way because of your words. Keep on blogging, my friends... :)
